As we move towards Net Zero, there have been a number of policy, legislation and guidance documents put in place to support companies in making this journey.
However, it can be difficult to keep up to date with all of these mandatory requirements. This information is intended to help companies better understand, and maintain compliance for, the Energy Savings Opportunity Scheme (ESOS).

ESOS is a mandatory energy assessment scheme for organisations in the UK that meet the qualification criteria. ESOS measures a business’s total energy consumption and identifies measures to save energy and achieve carbon and cost savings.
Every four years, these companies must carry out ESOS assessments which measure total energy consumption and may require energy audits of a specific standard and content which cover 95% of the energy consumption within a company, to help reduce UK carbon emissions.
The ESOS assessment is designed to identify tailored and cost-effective measures to allow participating businesses to save energy and achieve carbon and cost savings. The savings from implementing the recommendations are estimated to significantly outweigh the costs of assessment.
The assessments must be signed off by a suitably qualified and experienced Lead Assessor who is a registered by an approved professional body unless 100% of your energy supplies are covered by another compliance route (e.g. ISO 50001 certification), your total energy consumption is less than 40,000 kWh, or you have zero energy responsibility under the ESOS rules.

ESOS compliance is now in phase 3 with the compliance date of 5th June 2024.
Failure to comply can lead up to a fine of £50,000, plus £500 for each working day the organisation remains in violation.
